Library Hours

During the school year, our regular hours are from 8:00 AM until 3:15 PM, Monday through Friday. The library is closed during school holidays.

Our Library's Purpose

The purpose of the Washington Elementary School Library is to support our students' education as lifelong learners and readers by putting resources in the hands of students and the school community, encouraging students to read, teaching students the skills necessary to evaluate information, and encouraging student responsibility.

Our Vision

The Washington Elementary School Library is

  • both a physical and an online space that provides excellent resources and instruction which engage students and the entire school community in the joys of learning and reading.
  • a place where the school community can find supportive staff, volunteers, colleagues and students who value diversity and respect the dignity of each individual in our community.
  • a service organization which provides access to information, books and resources that help individuals, classrooms and collaborative groups meet their learning goals.

Expectations and Guidelines

Circulation Guidelines

Preschool through first grade students generally check out one book at a time as they learn how to take care of books and how to return them in a timely fashion. Checkout period is for one six-day cycle.
  • Preschool students select from a collection designed to meet their learning needs. They keep their books in the classroom while learning how to use the library and how to care for books.
  • Kindergarten and First Grade students have access to the Easy Picture Books and Easy Non-Fiction sections of the library. Kindergarten students may keep their books at school during the first week or so while learning book care and library practices.
Second through Sixth Grade students generally check out two books at a time, although extra books are allowed for classroom projects and for our Blue Light Specials (see below). The circulation period is for two six-day cycles.

Staff members have unlimited circulation access to the items in the student and teacher resource collection.

Parents may stop in during regular library hours to get a parent library card which allows them to check out up to 5 books at a time for a one-week period.

Behavior and Environment in the Library

The Washington Elementary School Library is a vibrant learning environment. Our students are expert in demonstrating the school rules while using the library resources. They are respectful, responsible and do their personal best whether using the library with their class, a small group or individually. They show a deep commitment to caring for the books, equipment and other resources in the library. When using the library independently, they bring their pass and use the resources purposefully while showing respect for the other activities taking place in the library.
